Things were happening so fast, that they seemed to lose meaning. Everything flew at me, and I never got a chance to process it before the next major event happened. The first half of the book was slower, as we get used to the characters and the world, but the second half flew by. I can’t decide if this book needed to be split into two books, or if it didn’t even have enough plot for one. “In the end, we made enemies with our heads, but we unmade them with our hearts.” PlotĪh, the plot. It was also used with negative connotations, discussing thieves and murderers. Many Romani consider this word a slur, and it really upset me to see it mentioned three separate times in the book. I do want to mention one other thing relating to the writing and setting: there are a few times where they use the world “G*ypsies”. To be honest, I’d struggle to tell you much about Coroa and Isolte to begin with, and what little I do know felt like small fun facts that had no impact on the characters who live there, or the plot.

I have very little understanding of this world, beyond the two main countries that are discussed. I’m assuming there’s more than Coroa and Isolte, because people occasionally refer to kingdoms other than the two, but I can’t tell you anything about them.

It served its purpose, and that was all.Īs for the setting- I guess it did that too? Except, barely. There’s nothing outstanding or impressive with it, yet nothing that bothered me. I was completely entranced by them, and technically, they’re the reason I discovered the book community. The writing in this book is… fine. 😂 Well, apparently I was a rebel back then, because I started ~secretly~ reading the books after I came home from school. My mom found me with a copy, and she banned me from reading it until I was older.

I discovered it because my sisters bought the series and were reading it, and I really wanted to read it too because the idea of winning a prince’s heart was so appealing to young Caitlin.

Your reaction to the script for the TV show is my exact same reaction 😂 I have no idea what the writers were thinking lmao!! Also, I have a complicated relationship with this book, and I have so many memories attached to it. For example, Marlee is the bubbly best friend, and Celeste is the bitchy mean competitor.

The crux of this story focuses on the budding romance between Prince Maxon and America so unfortunately, all the other characters do come off as fairly one dimensional (though I will acknowledge they show more depth in Books 2 & 3).

Like many other YA novels published between 20, The Selection is filled with all your classic tropes: the “she’s not like other girls”, “the mean popular girl who wears too much makeup and shows too much cleavage”, “the love triangle”, and more! 🤪 Depending on what you’re hoping to get out of this book, these cliches may or may not be for you. “True love is usually the most inconvenient kind.” (AKA it’s The Hunger Games meets The Bachelor) After entering the competition unwillingly after insistence from her mother and long-time secret boyfriend, Aspen Leger, America is uprooted from her happy mundane life and thrust into the royal spotlight. Our protagonist, America Singer is a 17-year-old Five who is chosen to join 34 other girls to participate in the Selection, a competition to win the heart of Prince Maxon Schreave and become the princess of Illéa.
